Types of alphabets - did you know ...
The alphabet (from Latin alphabet or from the Greek for the names of the first letters of the alphabet: alpha and beta) is one of the most popular speech writing systems. The term is sometimes used with several meanings, causing lots of confusion in both the history and theory of writing. The letters of most alphabets are arranged in a fixed, specific alphabetical (sequential) order. The name comes from the first two letters of the Greek alphabet: alpha (α) and beta (β).
The first European alphabet was the Greek alphabet, derived from the Phoenician alphabet. Most of the alphabets used to write European languages are derived from a version of the Greek alphabet - including the Latin and Cyrillic alphabets. From the Latin alphabet come, inter alia, Polish alphabet (created by removing the letters q, v and x and adding a few letters - ą, ć, ę, ł, ń, ó, ś, ź, ż), the English alphabet, the French alphabet, the German alphabet, the Italian alphabet and many others. (full article available at https://encenc.pl/alfabet/).
The KAFFI project developed a short presentation about the alphabet and interesting facts about the national languages of the project partner countries. The presentation is available in English, and soon also in Polish.
