Overview
The Covid-19 crisis had had 2 consequences on seniors and their relation with technology: (1) the increased use of the internet and technology to avoid isolation and keeping in touch with family and friends (“younger seniors” in particular) and (2) they have been fell behind and widen the digital divide (older seniors and in general all those with lower education and low digital skills even before the crisis). Despite most (“younger”) seniors being healthy and very active, many met certain challenges even before the Covid-19 crisis, many of which have been exacerbated during the pandemic. For instance: being less mobile, more alone, spending more time in one place (at home), the difficulties of grocery shopping, the worries about illness and society, and not being able to have as much fun as they like. Being mobile means walking around but also being able to drive, and take a bus to get to places. In addition, during the crisis, they’ve been even more isolated. As many as 9 in 10 seniors said they had been impacted somehow by the crisis, and most of them, 7 in 10, said they had been highly ‘socially’ impacted by the crisis. Not to mention, in the area of health care, more health appointments, services and products are being transferred to the online sphere, as many of us have experienced during the pandemic.
Project results
Project result 1: Report on risks and barriers faced in the digital environment
The report presents the main social media (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, but also email, IM apps…) and other similar tools largely used nowadays to describe the risks and dangers associated with them specifically.
Project result 2: Virtual risk scenarios
Partners will create interactive scenarios mimicking a real digital environment to allow seniors to get used to the tools in a fun and secure way. The digital scenarios will show the most common scams, fake news, phishing techniques, deep-fake videos etc., and increase seniors’ capacity to recognize them.
Project result 3: Micro-lesson: How does that work?
Micro-lesson aimed at showing how the ‘dangers’ presented in the scenarios are created, by whom, why, and for what purpose. Actual education materials targeting seniors is not up to date and often not in line with their needs.
Project result 4: MILEAGE Handbook for Educators
The HANDBOOK aims at offering knowledge and skills to help practitioners in becoming more effective in creating an interesting learning environment for seniors using the MILEAGE resources.
