“European Cooperation in Education of Mentally Handicapped” Project has been prepared with 7 partners under the coordination of Izmit District Directorate of National Education in order to change the practice of mentally handicapped specialists working in order to gain alternative communication skills and to work in the sexual education process for people with disabilities.
Universities are institutions that work with people with disabilities in different statuses such as special education school, association, nursing home for the disabled and the hearing impaired institute. Our goal is to increase the quality of education in the long term by transferring the work done in the institutions with these partners to each other with application changes, renewing the works in our institutions, increasing the competencies of the teachers. A web page will be opened for the promotion of the project, information about institutions, participants, events, evaluation will be available on this page. It will produce content for each partner web page.
Our project will start in November 2020 and last for 24 months. 3 management meetings are planned. 2 experts will attend from each institution. In this meeting, information activities regarding the duties and responsibilities of the project will be carried out, and information about the activities and contents to be prepared by each partner will be made. It will be evaluated in written feedback from partners and will be used in reporting.
In March 2021, the partner institutions will make an application exchange in order to transfer their practices to their partners in order to provide Alternative Communication Skills for the disabled who have communication difficulties at the Turin Deaf Institute. There will be 5 participants of special education employees from each institution. The works will be carried out for each institution according to the activities previously determined.
These activities are: establishing games with sign language, application presentations involving visual and verbal interaction, interactive applications, alternative communication methods applied for disabled people with verbal communication disabilities, and picture-dictionary preparation applications. A visual brochure and interactive CD will be prepared, in which all participants' works are exemplified. Thus, a permanent resource will be obtained and will be a guide for the applications to be made. It will be recorded at the renewed events and shared with partners on skype. The partners will also report their evaluation studies and share them with each other via e-mail. The effect of the reporting activity on teachers, students and the institution will be measured.
The event in Poland in January 2022 will include the practices that teachers make in the institutions of sexual education, depending on the physical development of the disabled. 5 training employees from each institution will participate in this event. Participants will convey the education methods used in sexual education in their institutions and the teaching methods applied, as well as the policies of their countries for the education of mentally disabled people. Events should be shared with due consideration for personal privacy. Participants will share what is taught in their own organizations with their colleagues and innovate their practices. The feedback of these applications will be recorded and reported. Thus, the effect of change on the institution will be evaluated.
After the activities, informative activities will be carried out with seminars that will invite institutions working with the disabled, externally, locally and locally. In the context of our partners having different institutions such as universities, directorates, associations, institutes, each partner will carry out dissemination works in accordance with their own structure and local conditions (workshops, seminars, group activities etc.)
With the project, learning and teaching activities in partner institutions will be renewed and the quality of teaching will be improved. The motivation of the training staff will increase. The problems experienced by disabled people who receive education will decrease and their education quality will increase.
