Inadequate physical activity combined with unhealthy eating habits lead to overweight and obesity. According to WHO data, one in two people in Europe is overweight and one in five is obese. Health problems such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, reproductive and cardiovascular problems are increasing due to lack of physical activity and unhealthy eating problems. Furthermore, according to the Nutrition and Physical Activity Initiatives report updated by the European Commission on 03.09.2019; unhealthy diet is directly turning into a huge health and budget burden. Obesity alone reduces life expectancy for up to 4 years by eliminating GDP growth of up to 4.5pp in the EU and consuming 7% of health budgets.
In addition, weight problems have a psychological impact on young people. Low self-esteem, anxiety, depression and eating disorders are key psychological problems of overweight in young people. On the other hand, they lead to social problems such as less active participation in society and difficulty in establishing social relations with peers. A significant and growing number of young people across Europe express concerns about the prevalence of high stress, anxiety, depression and other health problems among their peers. Young people talk about the enormous social pressures they face today and express the need to provide better youth mental health.
We believe that proper nutrition and sports are essential elements for a healthy life; therefore, we want to convince young people to do more sports and a balanced diet.
Among the 11 European Youth Goals 2019-2027, which presents a European vision that enables young people to fully understand their potential and explains which challenges should be overcome in areas affecting young people's lives;
* Ensuring and enabling all young people to be included in the society is the goal of "Inclusive Society. It can serve to provide more space, opportunities, resources and programs to improve dialogue and social cohesion and combat discrimination.
* Achieve better mental well-being and stop stigmatization of mental health issues; thus, according to the objective of “Mental Health and Welfare”, which aims to encourage the social participation of all young people; it is recommended to focus on measures that enable young people to be equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills for better mental well-being and to promote self- awareness by improving the appreciation of individual skills and powers.
In the line with the main goal of contributing to reducce the discrimination experienced by young people due to their physical disadvantages and encourage the social inclusion of young people for their health and welfare; the aim of this project, wich will last 7 months, is increasing the knowledge, skills and awareness of 36 young people between the ages of 15-18 about sports and nutrition in the partnership and to support their social inclusion.
Our objectives:
- Increasing awareness about the importance of healthy diet, fitness and physical health
- Learning together what is healthy, unhealthy and need to be removed and knowing about our eating habits
- Contributing to "Sustainable Europe" in nutrition, sports and health
- Supporting young people in developing basic skills
- Strengthening the profiles of youth and youth workers
- Promoting social inclusion and youth mobility.
